The first thing you notice with A Different Kind is how familiar it sounds – not in a recycled way, but in how it settles in instantly, like a song you forgot you already knew. It’s been five years since Social Gravy released the EP, and the reissue lands at the right time.
“Happening Now” opens the set with soft percussion, a washed-out vocal tone, and a hook that loops until it gets under your skin. There’s a haze over everything, but it’s deliberate. “Love You Better” kicks a little harder, built around a confident guitar riff that leans slightly glam without getting flashy. It’s the most radio-ready thing here, and it doesn’t fight that.
“Anyways” steps down into grittier territory. The production gets looser, like it’s been left out in the sun too long, but the feeling stays intact. It still carries that undercurrent of longing. “A Different Kind” closes the EP slow and subdued: mostly guitar and vocal, with just enough drums to give it weight. It’s not trying to say more than it needs to. Love You Better and Anyways feel especially built for film — mid-scene or closing credits: where the emotion doesn’t overstay, just lingers long enough before the cut.
The EP still holds up. No reinvention, no high concept: just four songs that wear their hearts plainly.
